THE SWITCH

An ENE Review of the novel
The Switch by Jude Mason

In BDSM parlance, a switch is a person who can play either the dominant
or submissive role. This is the dilemma of Sarah, the main character
in The Switch, by Jude Mason. Sarah has been asked by her Master,
Matthew, to find a second woman to join in their play. Sarah would dominate
her, because somehow Matthew knows this is what she'd like to do. Matthew,
of course, would get to dominate both ladies.

So Sarah goes to the neighborhood scene club, where she sees a woman
sitting alone at the bar. This is Candice, recently widowed, who
somehow picked a club where people think nothing of whipping each other
in public as a place to give her social life a kick start. When she
finally figures out the truth about the club, she wants to leave. No,
wait, she wants to stay. No, I was wrong, she wants to go, especially
after all these nasty old guys keep hitting on her. Sarah comes to the
rescue by offering to take Candice home, where danger lurks in the form
of a blackmailing photographer. Don't worry - the blackmailer's karma
will catch up with him before the book ends.

The Switch is a quick read. Unfortunately, at times I wondered if
it
had been quickly written; it certainly could have used the sure eye
of
a good editor. The characters are earnest in their desires, but their
conversation, at times, seems contrived and gosh, they sure do drink
a
lot of coffee. At one point, Candice gushes to her new friend, "I
can't believe I've known you for less than twenty-four hours and I trust
you
completely, but I do." Candice, dear, I've got a confession to
make -
I can't believe it either.

But all is not lost. If you're looking for scenes that will enhance
your BDSM daydreams, there's plenty of raw material in The Switch.
There's potential here. With more depth in the characters and a less
predictable plot, maybe the next book from this author will be even
better.

Tucked away in a quiet
corner of west coast Canada, Jude has been writing most of her life.
In the early years it wasn't exactly erotica; but then she found the
internet and a dream took form. The stories she'd carefully hidden away
were something that others wanted to read, and so she worked to improve
her skill. Taken under the wing of Roy Larkin, of Amatory
Ink, she plugged away until Dance
of Submission was born, and much to her surprised, published.
She's now a member of Erotica
Readers and Writers Association, co-manages a small community of
writers called Erotica
Writers Sanctuary and has her own website ~My
Haven~ where you can see more of her work.
